Schedule a date with Lake Worth, not your doctor, for a weekend, or lifetime getaway. Lake Worth is a picturesque Atlantic coastal town located in the southern shadow of glitz and glamorous West Palm Beach. This quirky city is home to some 40,000 residents, and hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. The newly completed $3.4 million reconstruction of the 960-foot fishing pier has reunited locals and attracted tourists alike. While West Palm Beach to the north hosts Donald Trumps Mar-A-Lago estate, Lake Worth hosts the largest street-painting festival in the country, with local, national, and international artisan’s eager to paint the town-literally.
At this years street-painting festival one such artisan not painting the street, was banging a beat instead, on pots and pans. Sitting atop a milk crate with a vast array of pots and pans his orchestra, a drum stick his paint brush, his masterpiece; a tin-can symphony. It is this type of energy that emerges from Lake Worth on a daily basis, not simply at yearly events.
Should one need additional enticing to visit Lake Worth, a healthy dose of coffee shops straight and LGBT owned and operated restaurants nightclubs and the like line the main streets (Lake and Lucerne Ave)of downtown Lake Worth. Find time, however, to venture off the main streets to get to the heart of Lake Worth's bohemian feel-good aura. A generous supply of local celebrity can be found in and around Lake Worth to quench the most discerning taste, while on that venture.
One such sighting may be found at Mother Earth Coffee and Gifts, an eclectic coffee house not of the ilk of 'chain' coffee shops. Instead, a sole proprietorship coffee shop on the corner of 2nd Avenue N and Federal Highway. The ambiance can be felt immediately upon entering this retro-like coffee house. The free-spirit, all-welcome atmosphere offers the patrons a sensory overload from colorful sarong covered tables to feathered dream-catchers dangling above. Local artisan's pastels and oil paintings adorn the walls for pleasure and sale. Add to that, soft sounds of music from around the world, and organic free-trade coffee--and one might expect to be greeted by Janis Joplin, Cat Stevens, and Ms Cleo simultaneously.
Indeed, there is a good chance of bumping into one of these iconic personas. The notorious and controversial pop icon television psychic from the late 90‘s, Ms. Cleo, is a regular at the coffee house. She provides paid readings as well as monthly workshops on all things spiritual. Pick up a monthly calendar to be sure not to miss her and any number of other colorful events happening at Mother Earth.
While Lake Worth's celebrity and eccentricities provide lure, and the street-painting festival provides bait, this eclectic city provides a cool comfortable winter climate. Where scarves are fashionable accessories, heaters are used for all-you-can-eat buffet tables.
Such is life in bohemia. A cool breeze and warm welcome invite an infectious desire to return again and again, with or without doctors orders.
Lake Worth . . . nothing to sneeze at!
